I feel like right now we need International Women’s Day (8 March 2017) more than ever. To celebrate Manchester also has its own Feminist festival; Wonder Women happening right now (2-12 March 2017), which celebrates the women’s movement in Manchester through film, art, music, walking tours, gallery takeovers, comedy and debate (you can find out about a shed load of cool goings on by popping over here. )
As part of the festival The Girl Gang Manchester (also on Facebook and Twitter @girlgangmcr) – a cool collective of women that think the same way- a modern approach to Feminism that I think we should all get behind, is hosting its second event; Girl Gang Manchester #2: Bridesmaids at 53Two on Alison Street 5pm until midnight on 11 March to celebrate and put creative women to the forefront.
It’s set to be a pretty funfilled evening- not only is there a screening of Bridesmaids (a post-noughties cult classic that makes me snort laugh every time I see it as well as challenging women’s roles in film. This one definitely satisfies the Bechdel Test) and bags more to boot.
The screening is at 8pm but before that there are workshops, collaborations with local female run businesses and pop up, performances. And let’s not forget the Female Anthem Wedding Disco afterwards; there’s a few tracks I’m hoping make an appearance there… You might even get a Girl Gang party bag if you’re lucky.
I’m most excited for the workshops which will include improvised comedy; fascinator making; paper flower bouquet making; seeing other women as allies rather than competitors, healthy relationships; self-worth and self-love. There will also be Vegan cake tasting, a dress up photo booth, chocolate fountains, prosecco bar, and loads more on the night.
Phew, that’s loads and there’s even more on the night!
If you’re over 15 and this sounds exciting to you (how could it not?!) you should come. Tickets are £15.00 and can be bought here.
